Where the community comes together and art connects us
Our Story
Located in the Hanlon-Longwood community on the former William H. Lemmel campus, ConneXions is a middle and high school serving the Baltimore community. From its humble beginnings as a small charter school with only a single sixth-grade class, ConneXions has grown into a thriving middle and high school with a student body of more than 450 students and celebrated its first graduating class in 2010.
What We Offer
Aside from a rigorous academic program, ConneXions also offers a diverse and engaging range of electives, including Performing Arts such as Theatre, Vocal Music, African Dance, Modern Dance, Ballet, and African Drum, alongside Visual Arts options like Painting and Drawing, Printmaking, Design, Audio-Visual studies, and Photography, providing students with many creative pathways to explore.
ACADEMICS
At ConneXions, learning is built around project- and inquiry-based curricula written by our own teachers, ensuring instruction stays grounded in real classroom experience and responsive to student needs. Students demonstrate mastery through a performance assessment system centered on promotion by exhibition, giving them the chance to showcase their growth and understanding in meaningful, authentic ways.
This work is further enriched by our affiliations with organizations like the Eubie Blake Cultural Center, the Leadership Institute, the Coalition of Essential Schools, the Baltimore Urban Debate League, Clayworks, and the Algebra Project partnerships that extend learning beyond the classroom and connect students to Baltimore's broader creative and intellectual community.
SPECIAL EDUCATION
ConneXions is dedicated to ensuring that students with special needs are fully accommodated, meeting and exceeding the standards required by State Law. We believe that every student, regardless of the challenges they face, deserves an educational environment where they can thrive — and our approach reflects that commitment at every level. Our support department works around the clock, providing consistent, individualized support to students both in the classroom and throughout school life more broadly. This includes close collaboration with teachers, families, and staff to ensure that accommodations are not just met on paper, but genuinely integrated into each student's daily experience. From academic instruction to social and emotional support, our goal is to remove barriers and create a school community where every student feels seen, supported, and empowered to succeed — academically, socially, and personally.
LIFE SKILLS
ConneXions is committed to preparing our students for life after high school, ensuring their transition into adulthood is as smooth and successful as possible. We recognize that academic achievement alone doesn't guarantee a student is ready for the real world — true readiness comes from practical, lived skills that build confidence and independence. That's why our program includes hands-on lessons in money management, cooking, hygiene, job readiness, travel, and daily living, giving students the chance to practice and master the everyday tasks that adult life requires. Beyond these practical skills, students are also taught how to make thoughtful, informed decisions — from small daily choices to major life decisions — so they leave ConneXions not just prepared to hold a job or manage a household, but equipped with the judgment and self-assurance to navigate the complexities of independent adult life. Ultimately, this program reflects our belief that preparing students for the future means addressing the whole person, not just the classroom.
STUDENT LIFE
ConneXions is a small, personalized school committed to humane and holistic education, where every student is known and supported.
Serving 425 students in grades 6–12, we keep class sizes intentionally small — between 15 and 20 students — with a staff-to-student ratio of 1:18, allowing for close relationships and individualized attention.
Our academic program is grounded in the Styer-Fitzgerald curriculum, shaping how lessons are taught across all grade levels.
ARTS
ConneXions offers a rich and expansive arts program, with daily classes spanning Visual Arts, Band (both Concert and Marching), Theater, Dance (Ballet, Modern, West African, and Hip Hop), Vocal Music (Choral Ensembles and Recording), West African Drum, and Media Arts. This breadth allows students to explore multiple disciplines, discover their creative strengths, and build technical skill across a variety of artistic traditions — from classical training to contemporary and culturally rooted forms of expression. For students ready to take their talents further, ConneXions offers a Traveling Repertory Company, giving performers in Dance, Theater, Vocal Music, and West African Drum the opportunity to showcase their work beyond the classroom and represent the school in the wider community. At the center of this program is the Department of Art at ConneXions, which carries forward a long-standing tradition of imagination, thought, skill, and achievement in the visual arts — cultivating not just technical ability, but creative confidence and artistic identity in every student who walks through its doors.
STUDENT SUPPORT
ConneXions is committed to ensuring students have the physical and mental health support they need to promote academic success. We recognize that a student's ability to learn, grow, and thrive is deeply connected to their overall wellbeing — academic challenges rarely exist in isolation, and often stem from concerns happening outside the classroom. That's why our trained staff is equipped to address daily concerns and academic challenges through direct intervention, stepping in early to provide the right support at the right time. We also believe that meaningful support requires partnership, which is why our staff works closely with parents and teachers, maintaining open lines of communication to ensure every student's needs are understood and addressed from multiple angles. By supporting the whole student — mind and body — we help create the stability, care, and consistency students need to succeed, both inside and outside the classroom.
Their attention to detail and commitment to quality truly stood out. We’ve already recommended them to others.
